Funding and Support

Artspace is actively seeking funds through the City of Detroit, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and other public and private sources. This financial assistance will play a pivotal role in realizing the project and catering to the artistic housing requirements of Detroit.

The Artspace Detroit project emerges from the City of Detroit's vision to revitalize the urban landscape by supporting its creative sector. Recognizing the housing needs of its artists and creatives, the City, through its Department of Arts, Culture, and Entrepreneurship (ACE), embarked on collaborative studies with Artspace, resulting in the identification of a substantial demand for artist housing and creative workspaces in proximity to downtown Detroit.

Community Impact

Positioned in the Core City neighborhood, this project isn't just about infrastructure; it's an addition to a blossoming artistic community. It aims to provide both residential spaces and commercial avenues, breathing life into the area and fostering a hub for the city's vibrant creative community.

Key Project Goals

  1. Address and fulfill Detroit's creative workforce housing needs.
  2. Highlight and promote art and culture within the city.
  3. Stimulate economic development.
  4. Foster growth in public-private partnerships.

Location and Infrastructure

Artspace, in collaboration with ACE and Detroit's HRD, has selected the retired Fire Department Training Center at 2775 W. Warren Ave. This decision followed the execution of a Declaration of Surplus on August 23, 2023, transferring jurisdiction from the Fire Department to the Planning and Development Department. A subsequent Purchase Agreement was formalized on September 29, 2023.

  • Fire Training Center Building Renovation: The pre-existing Fire Training Center will undergo renovations to accommodate approximately 11 residential units, commercial areas, a lobby, and gallery space. Essential to this transformation is the preservation of the 6-story internal void, ensuring the original character of the Fire Training Center remains intact.
  • New Structures: In the surrounding available land, a new 3-story building is proposed, set to house 42 residential units and additional commercial spaces. The design also includes provisions for parking, a playground, and other landscaping.

Estimated Timeline

  • Winter 2024: Financial Closing & Construction Starts.
  • Spring 2026: Construction Completed.
  • Summer 2026: Lease-Up Begins.
  • Autumn/Winter 2026: Full Occupancy.
