Since 2005, as a community-centered dance company, The New Orleans Society of Dance (NOSD) has identified, developed, and enriched both burgeoning and novice performance artists. As a cultural arts hub, NOSD embodies, encourages, and exposes New Orleans' footprint of doll-masking and Jazz dance traditions. NOSD is the keeper of the state's largest and most comprehensive artifact collection devoted to the endearing Mardi Gras tradition of doll masquerading (Ca. 1912). Cultivating the art of masking and dance in all forms with an elevated sense of aesthetics and purpose, the New Orleans Society of Dance documents written, visual, and aural content, ensuring the art form's continuity through active preservation initiatives, education/ outreach programs, performances, and presentations.
Program Goals
They intend to create a hybrid dance and performance arts studio, a one-of-a-kind "New Orleans Baby Dolls" museum, and a black box theater to help generate revenue. The space will also serve as a den for our Mardi Krewe. We aim to develop visibility, awareness, appreciation, and opportunities for community artisans.
