Overview

Artspace is helping to sustain and grow Salida’s creative community with the Salida Space to Create project—part of Colorado’s visionary Space to Create initiative.

Designed to provide much-needed attainable space for artists and creative workers in Colorado’s rural and mountain towns, each Space to Create project is tailored to reflect the unique needs of its community. Salida’s vibrant arts scene was born in the 1990s when artists revitalized downtown, transforming vacant storefronts into thriving studios and galleries. Renowned today as an artsy, tourist destination with a growing creative sector and a thriving commercial district, Salida faces affordability challenges for both living and working spaces.

A 2022 Creative Space Needs Survey revealed strong demand, with some 250 of 300 respondents expressing interest in creative spaces in Salida. Located at 1st and D Streets within the state-certified Creative District, Salida Space to Create will rise on a site that once housed apartments but is now vacant. This brand-new, two-story building will bring attainable housing, dynamic community flex space, and a gallery, ensuring Salida’s creative communities continue to thrive.
