The Project was established in 2014, and became a certified nonprofit in 2015, with the mission to promote Maya Angelou’s life and legacy to the general public and the schools, through public forums, and workshops centered on the arts, writing, history and poetry. We seek partnerships with schools throughout the state with a special emphasis on the Arkansas Delta regions, and award three $1000 scholarships to academic scholars and two poetry awards to emerging student poets.
Our dream is for our own space to hold public events, bring students in for workshops and presentations, and have administrative office space as we continue to grow.
During this 12-month cohort, we hope to learn as much as possible about the real estate options for small nonprofits with limited budgets. We also hope to forge long term relationships with local realtors, bankers and other nonprofits who may be potential partners.
