Arab American Museum Gives Platform to Contemporary Saudi Artists

  Television screens show a disjointed man as he listens to music weaponized for torturing prisoners, a photograph gives viewers a stomach-turning vista from the top of a crane overlooking Mecca, and brightly colored, hand-painted walls fill Dearborn’s Arab American National Museum for the Epicenter X: Saudi Contemporary Art exhibit running from July 8 to Oct. 1. The exhibit is the first of its kind in Michigan to focus on and give a platform to Saudi art, says Museum Director Devon Akmon.

Survey could bring multi-million dollar project to Utica

 The City of Utica has the potential to earn a multi-million dollar arts development project. Mayor Palmieri, Artspace representatives, Cornell Rust to Green Urban Studio and the City's Utica Artspace Committee announced an online Utica Artspace Arts Market Survey that is now live online at www.UticaArtspaceSurvey.orgThe group issued a call to action from the regional arts community to take the survey - setting the stage for a potential $20 million arts development project in the city.

Artspace Lofts Construction Moving in Downtown Mesa

 More artists will be flocking into Mesa’s city limits by next year thanks to the new Artspace Lofts being built at 155 S. Hibbert St. The 50-unit complex is designed to offer artists a live-and-work environment by including 2,900 square feet for creative exploration with spaces for classes, studios, galleries, food pantries and more. Set to be completed in May 2018, these lofts are Artspace’s first venture in Arizona.

Last Thursdays art walk offers chance to discover Downtown artists

On the last Thursday of every month, something wonderful happens on the streets of Downtown El Paso.   People get out of their cars and stroll through intriguing artist studios, often not knowing what they will find. Arab museum launches artists' residency in Dearborn

  The Arab American National Museum has launched an artists’ residency that provides space for work and living across the street in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn’s former City Hall.   The museum’s first resident living and working at City Hall Artspace Lofts is Ayman Yossri Daydban, a Palestinian conceptual artist from Saudi Arabia. His work is part of “Epicenter X: Saudi Contemporary Art,” which opens Saturday at the museum and features the work of about 40 Saudi artists.

Artist spaces: Jonathan Thunder makes dark, playful pieces at Washington Studios

By the time you read this, Jonathan Thunder will have moved out of his fourth-floor apartment in Washington Studios and down to the second floor. This is probably good news for his cat, Benicio (named after Benicio Del Toro), who once took a flying leap from the window — but walked away with some scrapes and a limp and was fully recovered two weeks later. Thunder, a painter, and animator who lives-works-practices yoga within the same square footage is looking forward to the change — not to mention the sunrise.

Hopkins looks to create artist housing and studio space

Hopkins put art in the heart of its downtown with the opening of the Hopkins Arts Center 20 years ago.Now the city is looking to boost its creative center even more by building affordable housing and studio space for artists.The Hopkins City Council on Tuesday entered into an agreement with Artspace, a nonprofit developer of "live-work" spaces for artists, to explore the possibility. Artspace would tour potential sites in early August and meet with local artists and community members to determine whether there is enough interest in such a project.

Poet and Literary Underground founder Michele McDannold's monthly Legit AF reading series celebrates its first anniversary in Michigan City's Uptown Arts District next Monday. McDannold has given a stage at the Artspace Uptown Artist Lofts Building to local artists, and brought in notable writers from across the country.
