Since 1991, Gingarte Capoeira Chicago, founded and led by renowned Mestre Marisa Cordeiro, has been serving the greater Chicago area with the Afro-Brazilian cultural art of Capoeira, a beautiful combination of martial arts, dance, rhythmic movement, music and culture. As an all-volunteer-run organization, they offer classes at satellite locations as well as various elementary schools, and perform demonstrations and shows across all areas of Chicagoland.
During the Immersion Program, Gingarte Capoeira would like to formulate a sustainable business plan to support the lease or purchase of a space. The group's varying space needs include: room to hold classes, practice music, host events, relax, and to build and celebrate community. Their hope is that the 12-month program will allow them to hold themselves and the broader Gingarte community accountable. They will use the resources presented by Artspace alongside the potential economies of scale and idea sharing within the cohort to realize these goals. They are excited about the opportunity to creatively source a space that suits Gingarte's physical and financial needs.
